The first phase of the Saints' 2014 training camp opens today at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
Players will report for physicals and meetings and hold their strength and conditioning tests. On-field workouts begin Friday.
Hosting a NFL training camp is a first for the Greenbrier. Preparations included building facilities, from the ground up, including 3 practice fields (two natural turf and one synthetic grass), along with a 55,000 square foot multi-purpose building equipped with meeting rooms, weight rooms, locker rooms, training and physical therapy accommodations and kitchen and dining facilities - at a cost of $30 million.
In an interview with West Virginia Metro News, Jim Justice, owner of the Greenbrier, had high praise for the Saints organization, and its head coach, Sean Payton.
"And this guy's got his act together. He's an organizer, he's meticulous beyond belief, he's eat up with enthusiasm and passion."
"I can't stand people around me that are sticks-in-the-mud, but this guy is anything but that, and, you know, he's a winner."
"And he keeps telling me over and over, he said you're gonna be really proud of our players and the way they behave and everything else," Justice said.
The first on-field workout is a non-padded practice session on Friday, July 25, from 8:50am to 11:40am followed by a walk thru from 4:30pm to 5:30pm.
While at the Greenbrier, the Saints will hold a total of 20 practices, including a scrimmage on Saturday, August 2.
